Benefits of the Resource Efficiency and Cleaner Production Programme
The National Cleaner Production Centre of South Africa (NCPC-SA) is a key industrial sustainability programme of the Department of Trade and Industry (the dti), hosted at the CSIR. Its mandate is to assist South African industry to become competitive and sustainable through more efficient and greener production.
Focus Areas
The work of the NCPC-SA promotes the implementation of resource efficiency and cleaner
production (RECP) methodologies – identifying and advising on cost saving options through reduced energy, water and materials usage, as well as more efficient waste management and use. The Centre also hosts the Industrial Energy Efficiency (IEE) Project.
The NCPC-SA currently focuses on eight priority sectors identified in government’s Industrial Policy Action Plan (IPAP) as key to job creation, economic growth and market competitiveness.
The eight sectors on which RECP efforts are currently focused:
- Agro-processing
- Automotives
- Chemicals, Plastic Fabrication, Cosmetics and Pharmaceuticals
- Green industries and waste management
- Clothing, textiles, footwear and leather
- Pulp and paper
- Tourism and hospitality
- Metals and transport equipment, with a special focus on foundries
